Diani Beach sits at the centre of Kenya's South Coast, making it an ideal base for day trips that range from marine adventures to historical explorations. Within a 30-to-90-minute drive, visitors can reach pristine islands, ancient forests, and one of East Africa's most significant port cities.
The most popular excursion is the full-day trip to Wasini Island and Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park, located approximately 75 km south of Diani near the village of Shimoni. The journey begins with a drive to Shimoni, followed by a dhow crossing to Kisite Marine Park — a 28 km² protected area where bottlenose and humpback dolphins are spotted on roughly 90% of trips. Snorkelling over coral reefs is followed by a traditional Swahili seafood lunch on Wasini Island, with a visit to the Shimoni Slave Caves often included.
Funzi Island, reached via a 40-minute drive south to Bodo village, offers a quieter alternative: a canoe or boat ride through mangrove channels, a sandbank stop at low tide, and a seafood lunch with a village cultural walk. Shimba Hills National Reserve — the closest national reserve to Diani at roughly 30 minutes by road — delivers a full bush experience with elephants, the rare sable antelope, and the 25-metre Sheldrick Falls reached via a 2.5 km forest hike.
Mombasa, 30 km north across the Likoni Ferry, is a half-day or full-day trip. The centrepiece is Fort Jesus, a 16th-century Portuguese fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site, complemented by a walking tour of the Old Town's carved Swahili doors and spice markets.
