A Private Beach Home on the Kenyan Coast
Kinondo Kwetu — Swahili for 'Our Home at Kinondo' — sits on a private stretch of Galu Beach at the southern end of the Diani coastline. Opened in 2005 by Swedish hoteliers Ida and Filip Andersson, the property operates less like a hotel and more like a coastal home that happens to welcome guests. With a maximum of 38 visitors at any one time and 16 acres of grounds between the Indian Ocean and the sacred Kaya Kinondo forest, the lodge occupies one of the most secluded positions on Kenya's south coast. The nearest hotel is two kilometres away, and the adjacent land belongs to the local Digo community — ensuring the isolation is permanent, not temporary.
Rooms & Cottages
Accommodation is spread across five standalone cottages, two villas, and a private house. The three oceanfront cottages — Shimba, Twiga, and Songoro — are simple double en-suite rooms with private verandas. Mbuyu connects a double and single room for smaller families, while the two-storey Ubani Beach House offers dual entrances and works well for couples travelling together. Mama Taa Villa houses eight suites including a honeymoon suite and interconnecting family rooms. Mama Tina Villa provides three more economical rooms, one with its own ensuite and two sharing a bathroom. For exclusive use, Alex House is a separate four-bedroom villa with its own living area and kitchen, sleeping up to eight guests. Every room is individually decorated with locally sourced artefacts, carved wooden furniture, and coastal Kenyan textiles. Air conditioning and ensuite bathrooms are standard throughout; room locks are deliberately absent — a reflection of the trust-based culture the Anderssons have built with their team.
Dining & All-Inclusive Experience
The all-inclusive rate covers three meals a day plus most drinks. Breakfast runs from 8 to 10am with flexibility for late risers. Lunch is served at 1:30pm, afternoon tea at 4pm, and dinner is a three-course affair that changes location daily — one evening on the shaded beachfront, the next under lanterns beneath the baobab trees. The kitchen works with local farmers and fishermen, and the commitment to freshness extends to homemade bread, pasta, jams, and sauces. International flavours blend with Swahili and coastal Kenyan influences, and the set menu accommodates dietary needs without fuss. Champagne is the only significant extra at USD 140 per bottle.
Activities & Surroundings
Snorkelling, sea kayaking, yoga, tennis, and the on-site skate park are included in the rate. The property's own PADI dive centre offers courses and guided dives at extra cost. Three horses — two South African Boerperds and a Thoroughbred — are stabled on the grounds for beach rides and moonlight gallops along Galu Beach (approximately USD 60 per session). Kitesurfing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, and deep-sea fishing can also be arranged. Two pools offer contrasting settings: a large, deep main pool and a smaller beach-side pool with afternoon shade. A gym perched on the cliff overlooks the ocean, and a sauna provides a quieter retreat. The sacred Kaya Kinondo forest, a national monument gazetted by the National Museums of Kenya, is within walking distance. Beyond the lodge, the Anderssons run the Kinondo Kwetu Clinic, which handles over 20,000 patient visits annually — guests are welcome to visit.
