The waters off Diani Beach are part of one of the world's premier big-game fishing grounds. The warm Somali Current sweeps nutrient-rich waters along Kenya's South Coast, attracting pelagic species that draw competitive anglers from across the globe. The continental shelf drops off relatively close to shore — deep blue water is often reached within 30-45 minutes of leaving the reef.
The Diani Sport Fishing Club, affiliated with the Kenya Anglers and Sea Fishers Association (KASA) and the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), anchors the local fishing community. The club hosts annual tournaments including the Kenya International Billfish Tournament (attracting around 250 anglers) and the Samaki Classic. In December 2024, a 356 kg blue marlin was landed during a tournament off the Diani coast.
The primary target species rotate with the monsoon seasons. Sailfish dominate from October to December, while blue and striped marlin peak between January and March. Year-round species include yellowfin tuna, giant trevally, wahoo, dorado, and cobia. The season effectively runs from September to March, with most charter boats hauled out during May and June.
Charter options range from half-day reef fishing trips to full-day deep-sea expeditions 20+ nautical miles offshore. Several professional operators run modern sport-fishing boats equipped with fighting chairs, outriggers, and quality tackle. All charters operate on a tag-and-release basis for billfish, in line with IGFA conservation standards.
