Diani Beach sits within the ancestral homeland of the Mijikenda people — nine related Bantu-speaking ethnic groups who have inhabited Kenya's coast for centuries. The Digo sub-group are the predominant Mijikenda community in the Diani area, and their cultural heritage is deeply woven into the landscape, most visibly through the sacred Kaya forests.
Kaya Kinondo is the primary sacred forest of the Digo community, covering approximately 30 acres near Kinondo village. It contains an active sacred site, four traditional paths, an old water hole, and a central clearing used for ceremonies. The forest is governed by a Council of Elders structured in 11 hierarchical levels. Guided tours last approximately one hour and require visitors to wear a provided black sarong as a mark of respect. Entry costs approximately €6 for non-residents.
Giriama village tours offer immersive cultural encounters with another Mijikenda sub-group. Full-day tours include visits to local homesteads, preparation of traditional foods, coconut harvesting demonstrations, meetings with traditional healers, and vibrant Giriama dance performances.
Cooking classes along the coast focus on Swahili cuisine — a fusion of African, Arab, Indian, and Portuguese influences using fresh seafood, coconut milk, and coastal spices. Classes typically involve market visits, hands-on preparation, and shared meals.
