A Photographer's Eye for Sushi

The name gives it away if you know where to look. Shashin-Ka is Japanese for photographer — and that is exactly what owner Sang Il Lee was before he turned his attention from lenses to knives. A Korean national trained under a master sushi chef in South Korea, Lee brought his craft to Diani Beach and opened what is widely credited as the first sushi restaurant on Kenya's South Coast. The photography has not been left behind: the restaurant interior is dressed with cameras and light installations, and Lee insists that his sushi is tasted with the eyes first. Every plate is composed, not just assembled.

Morning Fish, Evening Sushi

What sets Shashin-Ka apart from other restaurants claiming fresh seafood is that Lee does his own sourcing. Each morning, he meets the local fishermen as they return to shore and personally selects the day's catch. The salmon is imported — there is no pretending otherwise — but the snapper, tuna, and prawns that make up the core of the menu travel from ocean to plate within hours. This is the foundation of everything: the sashimi, the nigiri, the tempura, and the maki rolls that regulars travel across Diani to eat.

The Menu

The menu covers the essential range of Japanese cuisine without overreaching. Sushi and sashimi are the headliners, but the tempura — both prawn and vegetable — draws consistent praise, as does the teriyaki chicken. Noodle dishes and set lunch boxes offer lighter options. For those who want to surrender the decision entirely, the Diamond Omakase lets Lee choose the courses. Every main comes with complimentary miso soup, a fresh salad, and dessert — a generous inclusion that adds genuine value, particularly at the KES 1,000-4,000 price range.

Practical Details

Shashin-Ka is tucked into the Costa Sur Complex on Diani Beach Road — the same compound as Kokkos Cafe Bistro. With only three or four tables and a sushi counter, this is not a place to arrive without a plan. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially during high season. The restaurant is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 10pm and Sunday from noon, closed Mondays. Call +254 720 747803 to book. Cash, Visa, and Mastercard accepted.
